urethane casting
Metropolis can cast your prototypes in urethane resins with properties that approach the characteristics of injection molded materials without a large investment on your part for tooling.
With hundreds of resins available we can meet your needs. Urethanes range from quick setting foams to tough rigid materials to slow curing, clear, flexible grades. Parts can be cast in color from water clear to tints and opaque colors.
The advantages of cast urethane prototypes include quick turnaround (approximately 5 days from completed file and client approval), inexpensive tooling costs, and a wide range of materials. Thick and thin walls can be molded without sink. Unlike injection molded parts, cast urethanes are not as prone to sink as thermo plastics, and therefore are not as sensitive to wall thickness variations.
Metropolis can use glass filling to strengthen rigid urethanes and can over mold to add soft-touch elastomers onto any existing part – like housings and other prototypes. We often cast in place threaded fasteners, irregular bores, and features. We also build tooling and parts with undercuts and pulls that are very economical to replicate when compared to injection molding. Rotational cast hollow parts are also available.
